Taming the Lycian Way: A Hiker's Unfiltered Gear Guide
Picture this: over 500 kilometers of ancient ruins, jagged limestone cliffs, and turquoise coastlines stretching across southern Turkey. The Lycian Way is one of the world's great long-distance trails and it will test both your spirit and your gear.
Footwear: Grip Over Everything
The terrain is notoriously rugged - loose rocks, steep descents, and ancient stone paths polished smooth over centuries. Trail runners with a solid rock plate work well if you pack light. Otherwise, lightweight hiking boots with good ankle support are a safer choice.
Skip Gore-Tex unless you are hiking in winter. Bring merino wool socks: they manage sweat, prevent blisters, and will not smell after three days.
Clothing: Less But Smarter
A lightweight, UPF-rated long-sleeve shirt keeps the sun off and saves you from constantly reapplying sunscreen. Zip-off pants are not fashionable but perfect: breezy on the coast, protective through thorny inland scrub.
Pack a light fleece and a compact rain shell. Two or three moisture-wicking t-shirts, one long layer, and you are sorted.
Water: Plan Ahead
Carry capacity for at least 3 liters. A squeeze filter like a Sawyer Squeeze lets you top up from springs or fountains. Some sections are dry for many kilometres - do not rely on finding water when you need it.
Sun Protection: Non-Negotiable
- Wide-brimmed hat
- Polarized sunglasses
- High SPF sweat-resistant sunscreen
This is not optional gear. It is survival gear.
Navigation and Tech
Download the trail offline on Maps.me or Gaia GPS before you start - signal comes and goes. Bring a power bank (10,000 mAh minimum). Charging spots in wilder sections are few and far between.
Camping vs. Village Stays
If camping: bring a freestanding tent (pegs do not work on limestone), a sleeping bag rated around 10C, and a sleeping pad. If staying in village pensions - which many hikers do - skip all of that. The weight savings are significant, and the village experience is part of what makes this trail special.
Final Thought
Pack light, start early, drink more water than you think you need, and leave enough space to actually enjoy where you are. Iyi yolculuklar.
