The perfect opener. Leaving Fethiye harbour the trail climbs through pine forest before descending to the hauntingly beautiful ghost town of Kayaköy — 3,500 abandoned stone houses — then continues to Ovacık.

Everything you need to know before you walk
The Lycian Way officially begins at Fethiye's harbour, where red-and-white waymarks lead you out of town and immediately into pine forest. The first hour is a steady climb with harbour views behind you — a good time to find your rhythm before the real trail begins.
The descent into Kayaköy is one of the most atmospheric moments on the entire route. This abandoned Greek village of 3,500 stone houses was emptied during the 1923 population exchange and has never been resettled. Walk slowly through the cobbled lanes, peer into roofless chapels, and take your time. There is nothing else like it in Turkey.
From Kayaköy the trail drops through olive groves and vineyards before climbing again to the plateau above Ovacık. The final approach follows a quiet tarmac road — stay on the waymarked path to avoid unnecessary detours. Ovacık has several pansiyons, restaurants and a small market, making it a comfortable first night.
