Stage 22 is magical from beginning to end. The climb over Musa Dağı takes you through pine forest to an open ridge with views of Olympos valley below. The descent into ancient Olympos is through dense subtropical vegetation — wild pomegranate, myrtle and carob crowd the path.
Olympos itself is an ancient city with a long counterculture history — the treehouse pensions in the adjacent bay became famous in the 1990s. The ruins are spread through a forested valley, with a river, Lycian tombs, Roman baths and a Byzantine church all visible.
Çıralı, the next village, lies near the Chimaera — a vent in the hillside where natural gas has burned continuously for millennia. The flames are most impressive at night. The beach at Çıralı is one of the most beautiful on the route and is a nesting site for sea turtles.
