Stage Guide

Everything you need to know before you walk

Stage 5 crosses high terrain between two very different landscapes: the intimate cove country of the southern stages and the broader agricultural valleys to the north. Route 5A passes the Lycian ruins of Sidyma — a rarely-visited site of sarcophagi, rock-cut tombs and column bases scattered across a hillside. Give yourself 30 minutes to explore.

The walking on the high plateau is exposed and can be brutally hot in summer. The terrain alternates between pine forest, scrub oak and bare limestone. Navigation requires attention — follow waymarks carefully through the plateau section.

The descent toward Bel is gradual, passing through the village of Ge where a small shop sometimes operates. Bel itself is a mountain settlement with basic accommodation and a genuine end-of-the-world atmosphere.

Key advice: Sidyma is signposted from the main trail on Route 5A. The ruins are unfenced and rarely visited — a highlight for history lovers. Fill water at every opportunity on this stage.
